DANGERMOUSE move over. Mice engineered in the lab to lack a key protein associated with vulnerability to drug addiction in humans turned out to be unusually impulsive. Louis Matzel at Rutgers University in New Jersey has created mice that lack the protein Nr-CAM. Although it plays a general role in the growth of neurons and their connections, the mice without Nr-CAM showed normal motor skills and learning abilities. But they performed poorly in a task that required them to stay still to avoid danger. They were also more sensitive to pain and “less cautious” when venturing into new places,
